It seems like the most random thoughts hit me around midnight, but this random thought actually made sense for once. What in the hell happened to good monster movies!? Seriously when was the last time we had a legit terrifying monster movie in theaters?

First let me be honest here, when I say “monster movie” I don’t mean just any monster movie. Sure there have been some decent movies that have come out these last few years that could fall into the monster movie category. But those aren’t the type of movies I’m talking about; I’m talking about some of the originals. When was the last time we saw Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein, the Mummy, or even The Creature from the Black Lagoon in a legit movie!? Go ahead…take your time and think….

THAT’S RIGHT THERE HASN’T BEEN! Thanks to Hollywood, all the things that used to give kids nightmares now want to love and cherish you. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking Hollywood for this, I just think it’s time we see some terror up on the movie screen. I want to see a film that would make Bela Lugosi or Boris Karloff proud. Give me a movie that nightmares are made of!

You would think with all the reboots or reimagining of franchises we’ve seen recently that Hollywood would jump on the chance to bring a classic back. I know they have the ability and funds to do it; it’s just a matter of them taking a chance. They always go for the simple cash cow and that’s about it, but I guarantee if they were to bring back one of the famous movie monsters in a reboot that still stays true to the classic, they would be surprised at the turn out it would get.

I think I’ve rambled on enough about this topic though; I want to know what your thoughts are.

The Wolfman with Benicio Del Toro (2010) was okay. Not scary, by any stretch – but very much the classic werewolf character design. I think the fundamental problem is there are many that don’t find those pillars of horror scary anymore, which leaves the door wide open for someone to step in and deliver some chills. I’m sure it can be done, and I’ll be there when it does.

Yeah, Wolfman was ok. Remember Wolf with Spader and Jack? Ooooo.

Anyway, I agree, Bryan. Also agree with you, Tommy, they go for what’s ‘safe’ these days, as in safe for the box office. How many SAW movies were there? Too many, and Paranormal Activity is doing it now, too.

Anyway, I would love to see them take on some classic monster movies, but not trying to update them. Well, update them, but not in a bad way. I think they can be made current and scary without resorting to what passes for horror these days.

What about brotherhood of the wolf, or cloverfield ? Both fun monster movies. But i agree I’d love to see my favorite monsters again. Blob anyone?
