So I watched this movie a few days back and have been struggling to figure a way to write it up. Not sure if it just writers block or if I’m just scared I missed something. See Brad watched the movie before I did, he wasn’t impressed… I finished the movie and had a different experience but upon talking about the flick I think that maybe I saw some things differently, or I didn’t catch some things I should have. But alas in the end I don’t think it change my feelings about the movie although I’m thinking I should watch it again.

Old V.S. New with Steak and eggs

Quick what’s what about the movie.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, a looper.  Year is 2074 and when the mob wants somebody out of the way they just don’t stuff them in a trunk and drop them off in the dessert. Nope! The have a illegal time machine and a host of people in the past (Loopers) who meet the would be trunk passenger on the other side (the past) and off them there. Boom now they are gone for good. Seems to pay well, but the job has a price, see when your done being a looper they close your loop, meaning they off you, or better told, you off you. (but not in the good way)

Sex, Drugs, and looping...

Bruce Willis is old Joe, yep the future version of J.G.L. character Joe. See Old Joe doesn’t really like the close the loop deal. He would rather not die. (big surprise right?) this causes some tension between him and, well, himself.  I don’t really want to spoil the entire flick so I’ll go ahead and leave out the rest of the fun details of what happens and give you some time to see it for yourself (if you haven’t already) But I will tell you why I like the flick so much.

Now I’m very sure now that every movie you see can ultimately be changed good or bad depending on your mood and when you watch it. Meaning if your in the right state of mind any movie will be good. Heck someone had to think Battlefield Earth was a good movie, at least one person I’m sure. That being said, Brad and I disagreed about how we felt about the movie, and that’s the fun part about this site and our little group of VS’ers.  So on to what I did love (yes finally)

Brings new meaning to touching yourself.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt nailed being a young Bruce Willis, there is no way around that. He killed it. The little Bruce nuisances, the make up, the small gestures, it was really amazing. Good Job!  Bruce Willis did a great job to, although he seems to play the same character, as long as that character is Bruce Willis, not necessarily  a bad thing but I do think that there were some scenes in this movie where he did step it up and go above the norm Bruce he normally gives us.  Next up was the perfectly cold and calm delivery of dialog of Jeff Daniels. He managed to be very intimidating with just a calm demeanor and a bushy beard.  Lastly is child actor Pierce Gagnon, he was just spot on, I know that the character he was playing was an “old soul” type character, older and wiser than his age, he had a way of controlling the scenes that he was in. I don’t think I’ve seen such child presence since Haley Joel Osment in the Sixth Sense.

All in all I enjoyed the movie, the acting was good, it has some great dialog, some ok action scenes, and delivered a good message in the end. If you haven’t seen it you should, then chime in. I’m sure both Brad and I and the rest of the VS’ers would love to hear what you think of the movie.  Either good or bad, doesn’t matter. Now its time for me to close my loop, I’ve got more movies to watch.
