Ghostbusters 2 (1989)

I still want to know this guys name...
I still want to know this guys name...

Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters 2 held the test of time for me, finished watching it for the second time this weekend.  Now I will agree with most of you out there that the second one is not as good as the first but still very enjoyable even after 21 years. Continue Reading… →

Shutter Island

"Dude that looks nothing like George Burns..."
"Dude that looks nothing like George Burns..."

Contrary to popular belief this is not a scary movie, not really sure it was ever meant to be one. It has its creepy moment, seeing as its set in 1954, on an island in Boston Harbor, on the site of an old civil war fort; that has since then been converted into a mental institution for the criminally insane. Bitch Slap

Yes, they're huge...quit looking down at them.
Yes, they're huge...quit looking down at them.

A while back I posted about a sexploitation flick that looked promising, Bitch Slap. Well, it made its way to DVD and onto my screen, and I have to tell you…I really wish it hadn’t.

Couples Retreat

walk like an egyptian..
walk like an egyptian..

My oh my…. I have to file this one next to some of my all time favorite comedies. It was a blast!

Couples Retreat is about 4 couples who go to Eden while one is trying to work on their marriage the rest were just hoping to enjoy the time away. Written by Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn and Dana Fox, and directed by… oh heck who cares who directed it, we know why we watched it, Because Jon and Vince wrote it.  (P.S.  Peter Billingsley directed it )

Now come follow along and ill tell you why I enjoyed it so much…… Continue Reading… →

Four Boxes

Four Boxes looks like an interesting indie film. It brings comparisons to Blair Witch, which is a comparison I don’t think we’ll see ending anytime soon. Whenever a new indie film within the horror/thriller genre is trying to get bigger exposure, it seems that the Blair Witch comparison is always brought up, (i.e. Paranormal Activity). However, they’ve gone a few steps further still…

16 Blocks

Bruce Willis as Det. Jack Mosley
Bruce Willis as Det. Jack Mosley

I don’t think this film took the box office by storm and I think I know why. Bruce Willis as a cop? Not exactly a new idea, right? Well, as one dimensional as Bruce can be sometimes, when he’s pushed, or given the right role, he really is an exceptional actor. Especially when he’s given a meaty role like the one in 16 Blocks.

Psycho Beach Party

Catch some rays and lure some beach boys.
Catch some rays and lure some beach boys.

One of my favorite film genres from the 1960’s is the surf genre. You know, those old Frankie and Annette movies, or even Gidget. There was such an air of innocence and naivete in those films. They were just fun movies that never took themselves too seriously.

Enter Psycho Beach Party, which turns the genre on its innocent ear. What we have here is a mash up of both the Frankie/Annette and Gidget movies, but mixed in with biting satire, a bit of horror, and loads of camp value. In a word: GENIUS.

Blue Velvet

Welcome to Lumberton, U.S.A.
Welcome to Lumberton, U.S.A.

Continuing on the groundwork I’ve laid for the Lime Green Set by David Lynch, we now make our way to a film of his that is, according to me, one of the greatest films of ours or any generation past: Blue Velvet. The dark humor, the characters, the intrigue, the mystery…it’s all here and Lynch uses them all, and more, perfectly. Not only are his script and direction spot on, but the actors are also deeply invested in their characters, which just gives that much more to the film.

She’s Out Of My League

I am pretty sure that this movie plays on every guy’s fantasy of someday just happening upon a perfect 10 that wants nothing more than a nice simple guy like him to want her. If only this could happen to me… I will definitely be seeing this movie when it comes out.

The Limits of Control

Isaach De Bankolé as the Lone Man.
Isaach De Bankolé as the Lone Man.

The latest Jim Jarmusch film, ‘The Limits of Control’, is another astounding slice of American cinema, (even though it was filmed out of the country), by the master of subtle cinema himself. This film is, as Jim Jarmsch put it himself in an interview, ‘an action movie with no action…whatever the hell that means‘. Starring Isaach De Bankolé, who I mentioned a couple posts ago in my Ghost Dog write up, is the star of this film, and he puts in a wonderful performance, as do the rest of the cast in this film about a hit man on a job.
